Pekingese Love

Pekingese love can be described in many ways. Let us examine some of the many ways a Pekingese does and will express love to you and others.

A pekingese can show love by being at the door to send you off on your way to work, or other activities. A pekingese will express love by also being at the door to greet you when you return home from work.

They are there, maybe barking a welcome, as their whole little body shakes in delight to see you. They will act as if you have been gone for ages, not hours.

A pekingese will express its love for you by coming to you to cuddle, by getting as close as possible. Many times it will lay its head upon you and press against you, this is the one of the many ways you know the Pekingese is saying I Love You.

Preventing Fear & Mistrust In Your Dog

Dogs become fearful when the owner’s correction is too abusive. For a correction to be effective and convey accurate information to the dog, it must fit the transgression. A puppy that is teething and nips does not need, and will not understand, a correction fit for the dog who has just bitten someone because the person’s hand touched his food dish. Unnecessarily abusive corrections will inhibit the dog from developing an outgoing, joyous, companion personality.

The owner who finds a day-old pile of feces left by the 10-week old puppy and reacts by beating the puppy until he cowers has only taught the animal to be very fearful and mistrusting in his owner’s presence when feces are on the floor. Beatings and physical abuse only produce fear and mistrust. Abusive treatment of any living entity is inhumane, cruel, and not to be tolerated for any reason. If any canine behavior,…

Developing Your Leadership Through Eye Contact

Every wolf pack has a leader, also referred to as the alpha figure. This wolf, sometimes a male, sometimes a female, controls many aspects of pack life, including, to a degree, defecation and urination rights and spots. Dogs, of course, are directly descended from wolves and now live in human packs. Problems arise when an individual dog, either through his genetic makeup or improper training by his owner, comes to think of himself as the leader of the pack.

If your dog thinks that he is the leader, you are in trouble. How can you know? Usually if you have behavior problems with your dog, you are not considered the leader no matter how you think you are viewed by your pet.

One way to establish your leadership or “Alphahood” is to simply get your dog’s eye. You might think that your dog looks at you quite frequently, but take a…

Show Dog Terms: Get, Pace

Get: Around dogs the word “get” means offspring, children, or progeny. Special non-regular classes are sometimes offered at specialty shows called Stud Dog Class or Brood Bitch Class. The stud dog (or brood bitch) is entered in the class “to be shown with two of his “get”, the get only to count.

To explain this: three dogs are brought into the ring; one is the sire or stud dog, the other two are his get; or one is the brood bitch and the other two are her get. Since the two get need not be under a year old the word puppies is not used. They need not be male, so the word dog is not used. Get is the correct word. Incidentally, in the judging of either the Stud Dog or Brood Bitch Class only the two get are judged.

Pace: A pace is a gait or manner of…

Recommended Diet For The Adult Dalmatian

The goal for feeding adult Dalmatians is one of “maintenance” while instituting a diet that is typically low in purines. In general, Dalmatians can do well on
maintenance rations containing mostly low-purine plant and animal-based rations as long as that ration has been specifically formulated to meet maintenance level requirements. This should be supported by studies performed by the manufacturer in accordance with AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials). In Canada, these products should be certified by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association in order to meet maintenance requirements.

There is nothing wrong with feeding a cereal-based diet to adult Dalmatians on maintenance rations and they are the most economical. However, you should select only those diets that have been substantiated by feeding trials to meet maintenance requirements, those that contain wholesome ingredients, and those that are recommended by your vet. Do not select based on price alone, on company advertising,…

Labrador Retriever Coat Color Inheritance

There are three acceptable coat colors in the Labrador retriever: black, yellow (with variation from fox-red to light cream), and chocolate. Black is the most common color, but the numbers of yellows and chocolates are on the rise.

Coat color is determined by the type of genes received from each of the parents. Black is the dominant color genetically. Simply put, if there is a black gene present in the dog’s makeup, the dog will be black. A yellow coat is produced when a dog receives a recessive gene for this color from both of its parents. In the absence of a dominant black gene, the recessive genes can be expressed. Because of this, a black dog can produce yellow or chocolate offspring if it carries both a dominant black gene and a hidden recessive.

The chocolate color is also a recessive, but many variables come into play regarding the inheritance…
