When you start looking at ads to find a Yorkshire Terrier, it is easy to become quickly confused. You will see ads that offer Toy Yorkshire Terriers, Miniature Yorkshire Terriers, Yorkie-Poos, Morkies, and even Parti-Colored Yorkies. Which one should you adopt?
First, let’s clear up some misconceptions. While there are numerous different types of Terriers, there is only one type of purebred Yorkshire Terrier. If a Yorkie is advertised as a toy or miniature, this does not mean that the breeder is breeding a special kind of Yorkie. This means that the Yorkie in question is smaller than average.
There are, however, Yorkie hybrids, such as the York-Poo, which is a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Poodle, or Morkies, which is a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Maltese. These are considered Designer Dogs, and most reputable breeders do not breed these dogs. Instead, they only breed purebred…

Among the various breeds of dogs, many people are surprised to find that Yorkshire Terriers are more than pampered pets who ride around in cars and stick their heads up out of their owner’s handbags. In fact, Yorkshire Terriers are not only loyal little dogs, they are incredibly intelligent. They are considered to be one of the most intelligent breeds.
Dr. Stanley Coren, an animal intelligence expert, determined that Yorkshire Terriers are above average in terms of intelligence. Out of 132 breeds tested, the Yorkshire Terrier ranked 27th. Yorkshire Terriers are so intelligent that they can do better than obeying one simple command at a time, like most breeds. The Yorkie can follow a series of long and complicated commands.
Has it ever felt like your Yorkshire Terrier understands what you are saying? This is because he probably does understand what you are saying. Yorkshire Terriers are perfectly capable of…

Each year, Yorkshire Terriers go missing. Most of those are actually stolen, because these dogs are worth a great deal of money to a savvy thief. If you have not already considered Microchipping your Yorkshire Terrier, you absolutely must consider this immediately, and make arrangements to have this done.
On average, Microchipping can cost somewhere between $40 and $70, depending on the area where you live, and the microchip that you order, as well as whether or not you are injecting the microchip yourself or having it done for you. The small microchip contains a number, which when put into the computer system returns information about the dog and his owner, including your name, phone number, address, and the name and phone number of your veterinarian.
Microchips are injected into the animal, just as you would inject vaccine, and this is something that you can do yourself, or you can…

In most cases, when you acquire a Yorkshire Terrier from a breeder, that puppy will already be spayed or neutered. There are many reasons why breeders spay and neuter the puppies before selling them. Even if your Yorkshire Terrier puppy is not spayed or neutered before coming to live with you, in most cases, the breeder will have a contract with you that require you to have the dog altered by the time that it is a certain age.
Spaying and neutering is usually done in the veterinarian’s office. You must call ahead for an appointment, and you will be asked to prevent your Yorkshire Terrier from eating or drinking anything after midnight the night before. Some veterinarians ask that you bring the animal to the office the evening before the procedure, where he is kept in a kennel overnight.
Your Yorkshire Terrier will be put to sleep with anesthesia,…

It could be that when you got your Yorkshire Terrier that you had dreams of entering him into shows. It could also be that you searched far and wide for a show quality puppy that would grow to be a show quality dog as well. But when is your Yorkshire Terrier actually ready to enter into shows?
Well, the fact is that some puppies are entered into the shows, if they have a showmanship quality to them. But even a puppy that will grow to be a show dog may not actually be ready for showing as a puppy. There is much work to be done.
There are two facets to getting ready for a show. First is the dogs overall look. The second facet, however, is his training, which is dependant on the classifications that you intend to show him in. Dog shows really are more than a beauty pageant…

Different breeds of dogs have different health concerns, and of course there are also canine health concerns that affect all breeds. Small breeds, such as the Yorkshire Terrier however have a special health concern that most people associate with human beings, instead of dogs. This health concern is Hypoglycemia.
Hypoglycemia, in layman’s terms, means low blood sugar. Symptoms of Hypoglycemia in Yorkshire Terriers include coordination issues, listlessness, and seizures, although like most illnesses, your Yorkie may only display one or more symptoms of Hypoglycemia, and not all symptoms. Hypoglycemia is considered to be an emergency situation, and should be treated as such. Take your Yorkshire Terrier to the veterinarian immediately. He may lose consciousness, and without treatment, he may die.
You can rub your dog’s gums with Karo Syrup, and this will help in an emergency, as it gets sugar in his system. This will help even if your dog…
