The Pekingese breed of dog has been domesticated for over two- thousand years. The first Pekingese were reported to have lived in the Chinese Imperial Court. Therefore we know that the Pekingese were domesticated many years ago. However the Pekingese breed still retains some of the wild breed of dog traits and characteristic. This article will show some examples of the traits being referred to.

When you look at a Pekingese it is a small breed of dog, therefore it is small in size. Therefore you think cute, cuddly, would not hurt a flea. Do not let the size of a Pekingese fool you, they are and can be a vivacious guard dog. A Pekingese will tackle an opponent three times its size. When the Pekingese is threatened or if it feels that its home or family might be in danger. This is a trait that can be traced back to the wild breeds of the past.

Should an animal of a different kind wander into your yard, the Pekingese will surround the animal and attack as a pack! This is also a trait of wild dog breeds. The wolf breed of wild dogs uses this method for defense. All the pack members old enough will defend the pack with their lives if necessary. This method is also used to hunt all the members will surround the prey when hunting for food.

A Pekingese is domestic in the fact it has its young in side a home of a regular doghouse in the yard of your home. So the Pekingese will allow its young to be born inside a human dwelling. The wild dog breeds of the past and even today will want to hide and conceal its young. The Pekingese will devour all traces of the birth of the young. This trait can also be traced back to the wild dog breeds of the past. Wild dogs would leave no evidence that any young had been born they would eat all the afterbirth, to conceal the birth. That way a predator could not get a scent and find the young and kill and eat it. The Pekingese of today as many other dog breeds do this very same thing. To protect the young at all costs.

Pekingese of today will live along side of humans and even go places with them. They will now travel in cars, however the dog breeds of the past as well as the present day, will avoid all of most human contact all together. Wild dogs see the humans as dangerous and avoid them completely.

Should a Pekingese become lost or separated from its master or home it probably could not forage for its own food. It probably could not even survive. Even though the Pekingese show many signs of the wild breeds, it has been fed all or most of its life, and does not know how to hunt for its own survival. So the domestication of the breed can have it downfalls as well as benefits.
