If you’ve ever seen a Taco Bell commercial, you may assume that you already know what Chihuahuas look like. That particular Chihuahua is called a short haired Chihuahua. Some Chihuahuas are bigger than that dog, and others are smaller.
These dogs are very small and compact. They weigh no more than twelve pounds, although a twelve pound Chihuahua would be considered big, and the breed standard for Chihuahuas, established by the American Kennel Club is no more than six pounds. The Chihuahua may stand anywhere from six inches to nine inches tall.
If the Chihuahua is a short haired dog, his coat is very short, and has a wiry feel to it. Short haired Chihuahuas may be referred to as smooth haired Chihuahuas. Long haired Chihuahuas have hair that grows to be one to two inches long, and is very soft and fine. Long haired Chihuahuas do not require hair cuts, and their hair is a bit wavy.
Chihuahuas may be a solid color, or the may be marked. They are essentially tan colored, and if they are marked, the markings are usually white. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t different colored Chihuahuas, but in most cases, those colors are just different shades of tan ? such as blonde ? however black and brown colored Chihuahuas are not uncommon. The head is shaped like an apple, and the Chihuahuas muzzle has a short and pointed appearance.
The Chihuahua has unique eyes. They are usually a very dark color, round in shape, and they appear to slightly protrude from the head. His tail will be long and will not curl, but may curve up over his back or curve up towards the side of his body. Chihuahuas have large ears, shaped like triangles with points on top. The ears do not flop once the dog is an adult. Instead, they stand straight up.
For dog show purposes, Chihuahuas are classified as toy breeds. They are the smallest breed of dog worldwide, which makes them rather special. Another special and unique thing about Chihuahuas is that they are the only breed of small dog that wasn’t purposely bred to be small. Therefore, they are deemed to be a natural toy breed.
Most Chihuahuas are not chosen by their owners based on their look or color. Instead, most Chihuahuas are chosen based on their personality. Ideally, a breeder will try to match the personality of the owner with the personality of a puppy in the litter, although often, the puppy will choose its owner even if none of the humans involved realize this.
